Dance - GCSE

GCSE Dance is part of the new suite of GCSEs starting in September 2016.

This course is aimed at students who have an interest in Dance, who want to learn more about the subject and who are committed and hardworking. Performing and choreography play an important role in the course and there is also the opportunity to study other styles and genres of dance. The critical appreciation of dance is also central to developing students understanding of different styles and cultural influences.

What content is covered?

 

Component 1: Performance and choreography

Performance

Set phrases through a solo performance (approximately 1 minute in duration)

Duet/trio performance (3½ minutes in duration)

Choreography

Solo or group choreography: solo (2 - 2 ½ minutes) or group dance for 2 - 5 dancers (3 - 3½ minutes)

 

Component 2: Dance appreciation

Knowledge and understanding of choreographic processes and performing skills

Critical appreciation of own work

Critical appreciation of professional works

 

How will I be assessed?

 

Component 1 Internally marked and externally moderated

Performance      30% of GCSE

                           40 marks (15 marks for set phrases and 25 marks for duet/trio performance)

 

Choreography    30% of GCSE     40 marks

Total component 60%. Non-exam assessment marked by the centre and moderated by AQA

 

Component 2: Dance appreciation

40% of GCSE         Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes         80 marks

 

Questions: Based on students own practice in performance and choreography and the GCSE Dance anthology.
