Snapchat & Yellow App Update

Parents & Carers - whilst this may not relate to you directly, you may have seen various reports in the media that the most recent Snapchat update may pose a safeguarding risk to children and young people. A new feature has been added to the app in which any photos/videos taken can be made public on a map for anyone to see - including people who are not your child’s friends. The advice to young people from safeguarding and online safety bodies is to turn their app to 'ghost mode' so that strangers cannot see their pictures. Please could you have this conversation with your child. It seems the update has not been clear on how their pictures will be used, but there are concerns that it can be as accurate as showing the stranger the location of one’s house as well as the pictures.

The link below outlines more detail about the update and how to change the settings: www.google.co.uk/amp/www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/06/23/police-issue-child-safety-warning-snapchat-maps-update-reveals/amp/.

There is also a new app called ‘Yellow App’ which again has features linked into social media platforms and is aimed as a ‘Tinder for Teens’. This also provides your child’s location to other users. Please see this short clip for a further explanation: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDrTzc-lHOs.
