The King’s School became a designated Sports College in 2002. Although the funding streams have now ceased, the school strongly believes that a successful PE curriculum and extra-curricular sport programme has a significant impact on the success of the school as a whole. Our specialist status has allowed us to utilise the power of PE and sport in the lives of young people and has been very important in helping students to achieve both personal and academic targets.
We believe passionately in the power of PE and sport to change people’s lives and have used the specialist status to embed programmes that reflect this. We have a thriving PE department that offer an innovative and engaging curriculum that meets the needs of all learners, regardless of ability. We also have a well-developed and growing extra-curricular programme that has something for everyone. Students and parents say that this is something that is a strong feature of the school.
Student leadership has been a focus of our work for some time. We offer informal and formal leadership opportunities in sport and these opportunities have now extended well beyond the PE department. Our most recent visit from Ofsted confirmed that our leadership programme is exceptional.
Its programmes for developing student leadership through academic, pastoral and sporting opportunities are exceptional. Staff support students in making an outstanding contribution to the life of the school and in the wider community as well as developing skills that are of great value in life beyond school. (Ofsted, 2011)
As well as developing our provision for PE and sport within the school we also have ongoing programmes to support the development of PE and sport in our local primary schools and across East Devon. We have a full programme of festivals and clubs for children in Key Stages 1 and 2 and we offer professional support to primary school staff. In addition, we are the local hub for the School Games, driving participation in school sport across East Devon.
Other programmes that we have include an able and talented athletes programme, an international link to a partner school in Ethiopia, Ten Tors teams and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to name but a few.
