OVERVIEW: The King’s School Library is a dynamic and busy facility which plays an important role in the school’s academic and social life. Students are actively encouraged to make use of its many high quality resources.
YEAR 6 TRANSITION: The Library engages students from the outset, with a one-hour Year 6 transition session designed to familiarise students with life at secondary school. This specially tailored and fun session helps to make the move to King’s a happy and highly positive one.
CURRICULUM SUPPORT: Library staff work closely with the Departments, regularly updating stock to meet the needs of an evolving curriculum and providing an impressive range of material to enhance learning. On a daily basis classes benefit from lessons in the stimulating environment with its blend of computers, books and wide range of resources.
RESEARCH SKILLS: As part of the school’s focus on developing key skills, the Librarian delivers Research Skills training to students across the years, from Year 7 Inductions to Year 9 Key Skills talks, Year 12 Inductions, Extended Project lessons and more.
A LEVELS & EXTENDED PROJECT: The Library is proud of the support and input it offers Sixth Formers and is a popular environment with Year 12 and 13 students. It provides support for A Level topics, delivers talks on, and gives guidance with, Extended Project research, helps with Personal Statements and much more.
ENRICHMENT: Each year the Library involves students in a variety of stimulating extra-curricular events such as author visits and the Student Librarian training programme. The Library ethos, always, is to elevate learning, to engage students positively with the written word and to provide a happy environment in which to enjoy the broader aspects of education.
LEADERSHIP: There is a Student Librarian Training Programme every year for students wishing to develop wider skills, including leadership. This is open to students of all abilities and encourages a range of transferable skills.
SKILLS FOR LEARNING & PASTORAL SUPPORT: As well as guiding and enhancing higher academic abilities, the Library is enormously supportive of those whose learning journey is more of a struggle. It supplies an ever-evolving range of resources designed to engage reluctant readers and those with specific difficulties. The Library encourages an understanding that much of the highest level learning is ‘outside the box’. It is warm and welcoming and often acts as a place to de-stress or just relax so it is no coincidence that school breaks and lunchtimes find the Library with standing room only.
