Sport
In addition to the curriculum provision enjoyed by students, the Physical Education department contributes significantly to enrich the personal development of students. In recognition of our outstanding provision we have been successful in achieving the School Games Gold Mark for the second year in succession.
All students in KS3 represent their House in at least one competitive sporting activity each year. The House system provides an incredibly valuable intra mural experience for many students who would not otherwise experience a competitive sporting activity. The extra-curricular programme provides valuable curriculum extension opportunities which is freely accessible to all students. The School fixture programme is extensive and wide ranging. Between 70 and 80 lunch time and after school clubs operate through the year, 30 different sports and activities are represented and are very well attended. As a hub-site for many area and district competitions the school provides opportunities for vast numbers of students both at The King's School and in the Exeter and East Devon area.
Student engagement in Leadership illustrates the support students show for their peers. The school offers both the Level 3 award in Community Sports Leadership and the Level 2 award in Junior Sports Leadership. As a consequence students volunteer and support the work of teachers, coaches and youth leaders. A very large majority do this in the wider community as well as at school. The School Sports Council provides students with a voice in the provision of PE and School Sport. This will ensure the school has a vibrant, meaningful PE and School Sports programme that engages a wide range of students in healthy, active lifestyles.
The Year 10 GCSE PE Outdoor Education residential provides students with the opportunity to absorb themselves in 4 days of high quality delivery. Each year a significant number of upper school students are involved in the initial Ten Tors training phase including the Abbots Way walk, coastal walk, Woodbury navigation training and two Dartmoor day walks. Each year The King’s School is very well represented at the Ten Tors event, entering teams in the 35 mile, 45 mile and 55 mile team challenge. In addition some of our students support SEND students from other schools and complete the Jubilee Challenge.
Students in Key Stage 4 and 5 are given the opportunity to complete both the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. These students are involved in the local community completing their volunteering, skills and physical recreation sections, as well as planning and carrying out their expedition.
An achievement for all culture/ethos operates in the school where the successes of every child is recognised and celebrated. Sport plays a prominent role in end of term whole school assemblies and the annual Sports Presentation Evening provides a fantastic forum to celebrate outstanding student achievement.
